Contextually responsive refurbishment and addition to Clerkenwell’s rich industrial heritage.

8-15 Aylesbury Street

Whilst almost undetectable from the outside, the existing building was built in several parts between 1910-1950, with tell-tell signs internally revealing themselves after peeling away the years of occupation and internal alteration.

A celebration of old and new has been explored by connecting the piecemeal floor plates and with the careful additions of new interlocking volumes - taking reference from the additive & subtractive evolution of the existing building.

Handmade bricks and roof tiles are used in the extensions with a patina of finishes used which echo the buildings various alterations. The traditional Clerkenwell mansard roofs are re-interpreted with a carefully folded roof form and projecting dormers that follow the rhythm of existing building.
